How To Grow Your Business On Instagram (and What to Do If You're Stuck)

Let’s be real… watching your follower count stay flat, or worse - drop, can feel disheartening. You’re posting consistently (most of the time 😅), your photos look decent and you’re using all the right hashtags… so why isn’t your Instagram growing?

The truth is, it’s rarely one thing. Social media growth is a mix of strategy, consistency and understanding what your audience actually  wants to see. The good news? If you’re feeling stuck there are some easy fixes that can make a real difference.

1. You’re Posting… But Not Connecting

A pretty feed is great but if your posts don’t spark emotion, encourage action or speak directly to your audience’s needs they’re easy to scroll past.

Fix it: Write like you're having a conversation. Share behind-the-scenes moments, client wins or your why. Ask questions. Invite people in. You’d be amazed at what happens when you stop “marketing” and start connecting.

2. You’re Not Showing Your Face Enough

I know, showing up on camera isn’t everyone’s favourite thing. But people buy from people. If your feed is all product, pretty flatlays or graphics you’re missing a huge chance to build trust.

Fix it: Start small. One intro post, a casual story, a coffee-break check-in. You don’t have to dance or overshare- just be you 

3. Inconsistent Branding is Confusing People

If someone lands on your page and can’t figure out what you do, who it’s for or why it matters they’re not going to stick around. A scattered feed leads to a scattered message.

Fix it: Dial in your brand identity (that’s my jam if you need help 💫). Use consistent colours, fonts, tone of voice and imagery that matches your vibe and values. When people know what to expect, they’re more likely to hit follow.

4. You’re Not Using Reels to Your Advantage

Love them or hate them, short-form video is how new people are finding accounts right now. Reels are Instagram’s favourite child and they’re pushing them hard.

Fix it: You don’t need to go viral. Just aim to show up in your niche. Tutorials, before-and-afters, day-in-the-life, voiceover tips - it’s all about helpful, relatable content.

5. You Don’t Have an Engagement Strategy (You’re Just Posting and Hoping)

Posting beautiful content isn’t enough if you’re not taking the time to connect with your audience. If you’re just showing up to tick a box and then logging off your community will feel it and it shows in your engagement.

Fix it: Start making space in your schedule to engage -  reply to comments, respond to DMs, leave thoughtful messages on other accounts and show genuine interest in your community. Social media isn’t just a platform, it’s a conversation. And the more you nurture it, the more your brand will grow.

Need a hand? Our social packages are designed to bring you engagement strategy and scroll-stopping visuals so you’re not just present, but purposeful.

Moonglow Tip: It’s easy to get caught up in chasing big follower numbers, but what really matters is how many of those followers are actually engaging with your content. A smaller, engaged audience will always be more powerful than a large, silent one. Focus on building genuine connections — that’s where the real growth (and results) happen.
